Apicella Throws 300th Career Strikeout in Conference Closeout

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America softball team wrapped regular season Landmark Conference action on Saturday with an opening 6-1 victory and a final 2-0 loss to the University of Scranton. 

Despite the second game loss, Kerri Apicella struck out the 300th batter of her career in the top of the second.

Catholic scored singled runs in the bottom of the second, fifth and sixth, and game-high three runs in the bottom of the third of game one.

Rose Shaver guided the offense with two hits and two RBIs, along with Erin Adams one run and two hits.  Overall, CUA finished with eight hits in the win.

Victoria Capozucca tallied the win in her seven innings from the mound.  The senior struck out five Royals, while walking two and permitting one run.

Scranton slugged single runs in the top of the first and the fifth for a 2-0 win, which the Cardinals could not overcome.  Kristina Lozupone, Erin Adams, Christy Sanchez and Tori Marcavage each recorded single hits without a strikeout in game two. 

Apicella took the loss in seven innings of action despite striking out five and only allowing four hits.

CUA concludes the regular season on Sunday, April 27 in a doubleheader with Frostburg State.  The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.

The Cards will then enter the Landmark Conference Tournament on Friday, May 2 with a 1:00 p.m. matchup against Moravian at Susquehanna.
