Winchester, Va - The Catholic University of America baseball team continues their unbeaten streak, playing No. 14 Shenandoah University to a 2-2 tie through 13 innings, before the game was called due to darkness, on Wednesday, March 18 in Winchester, Va.
In the mid-week match up against D3baseball.com's No. 14 ranked team, Shenandoah University, CUA's Karan Sinha took the mound for his second career start. Sinha faced 25 batters in his six innings on the rubber giving up zero runs and throwing six strikeouts with just one walk.
Mark Duffy came as reliever in the seventh, pitching 3.1 innings giving up one unearned run while throwing one strikeout. Joseph Salzano took the mound in extra innings to face five batters while Joseph Prego closed the 13 inning showdown with one earned run and three K's.
The game remained scoreless though the first three innings. In the top of the fourth the Cards broke the game open when Eric Scamardella sent a sacrifice fly into center field for Stefan Poggioli to tag up and run home.
With the Cardinals ahead 1-0 nearing the end of regulation innings, the Hornets drove in a run off a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth to tie it up. Neither team was able to bring anyone across the plate in the ninth, sending the match up into extra innings.
The extra innings continued with a 1-1 tie to the 13th. In the top of the 13th the Cards looked to break away with the winning run. John Palladino stood in the batter's box with two outs on the board and a 2-0 count as he sent a line drive into right field to bring in Poggioli and gain a 2-1 CUA lead.
Shenandoah answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2. With 13 full innings played and no solidified winner the umpires were forced to call the game due to darkness.
The tie brings the Cardinals to 8-0-1 on the season and the Hornets to 7-2-1 in 2015.
Catholic University returns home on Saturday, March 21 for a Landmark Conference double header featuring Elizabethtown College beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Robert J. Talbot field. The three game series will conclude on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. matchup against the Blue Jays.
