Baseball Falls to Moravian in Landmark Opener, Double Header

Bethlehem, Pa. - In the opening weekend of Landmark Conference play, The Catholic University of America baseball team dropped its double header to Moravian College, 4-3 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon.

During game one, Moravian found their way on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning when senior Charles Savite it an RBI double into centerfield. The Greyhounds earned two more in the fouth inning and an additional run in the fifth.

The Cardinals struck back in top of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Stefan Poggioli hit and RBI single to score fellow senior Eric Scamardella. In the following inning, with a runner on second, senior John Palladino lobbed a 2-run homer of the fence. The Cards were unable to come across the plate again in the inning, surrendering the series opener, 4-3, to the Greyhounds.

Sophomore Jack Hennessy started on the mound for the Cardinals in game one and pitched 3.2 innings. Freshman Jon Mierzwa entered the game as relief, throwing for the remaining 2.1 innings.

Catholic earned an early run in the first inning of game two. With the bases loaded, sophomore Anthony Ferlise popped a sacrifice fly to right field to sophomore Matt Hsiung.

After 2.5 scoreless innings the Greyhounds earned three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With a solo homerun from senior Alex Bull in the fifth, Moravian tallied one more for a  4-1 advantage. The Cardinals were unable to capitalized through the seventh inning and the Greyhounds took game two.

Junior Karan Sinha opened game two on the rubber for CUA while seniors Joe Kelly and Josh Martin each spent time pitching relief for the Cardinals.

The 3-game conference series with continue in Bethlehem Pa., at 12 p.m., on Sunday March 20.
