Catholic Baseball Tops Washington College, 9-1

Chestertown, Md. - The Catholic University of America baseball team earned a 9-1 victory over Washington College on Friday afternoon.

Catholic junior Danny O'Hagan led the Cardinals at the plate going 4-of-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs and runs.

The Shoremen of Washington College got across the plate first with a run in the second inning. The Cardinals tied the game in the fourth when O'Hagan reached on a fielder's choice, scoring senior Paul Burmester.

Burmester singled in the seventh inning to score classmate Brett Padula for the go-ahead run. The Cards insured the victory with two more runs in the eighth and brought five additional runs home in the ninth.

In the eight inning, junior Jake Crist hit an RBI-single to left field scoring junior Brennan Cotter then Padula popped a sacrifice fly to second base to score O'Hagan.

In the ninth inning, sophomore Bailey Lewis came home on a passed ball. Junior Jack Hennessy reach on an error which scored Burmester and brought the Cards ahead 6-1.

Next at the plate, O'Hagan ripped a double down the left field line to score junior Cotter. During the following at-bat, junior Bo Williams lobbed a double into right field to bring Hennessy across the plate.

O'Hagan came home for Catholic's final run of the afternoon when rookie Connor Sullivan singled to left center.

Sophomore Mason Belcher opened the game on the rubber for Catholic, throwing five innings. Freshman Colin Cunningham pitched two innings of relief and earned his first career win as a Cardinal. Junior Mark Duffy pitched the eighth inning and senior Joseph Salzano closed the game for Catholic.

The Cardinals head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for their annual spring break trip March 4-11. They will open the week with a doubleheader against Penn State – Berks on Sunday, March 5.
