Catholic Splits Doubleheader with Juniata

Huntingdon, Pa. - The Catholic University of America baseball team split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Juniata College on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals fell 9-0 in game one and rallied for a 5-0 victory in game two, advancing their season record to 23-10 and league record to 11-5.

Sophomore Jon Mierzwa took the mound in game two for his sixth win of the season. Mierzwa, who leads the conference in strikeouts (75), tossed 10 K's in six innings before senior Joseph Salzano closed the game for the Cardinals.

Junior Danny O'Hagan recorded three hits in four at-bats including an RBI double in the third inning to score freshman Cid Porter. Up next, junior Jake Crist singled through the left side to score O'Hagan. 

Crist recorded his second RBI of the game when he sent a fly ball into left field to which scored junior Jack Hennessy in the fifth.

While pinch-hitting in the top of the sixth, senior Paul Burmester singled to right field to bring home sophomore Bailey Lewis. Hennessy scored in the seventh inning to bring the Cardinals' final tally to five runs.

During game one, three Cardinals spent time on the rubber. Junior David Gately pitched the opening three innings with four strikeouts. Freshman Ross Dean pitched 2.1 innings of relief and senior Christopher Hutton closed for Catholic.

The Cardinals and Eagles will play game three of their Landmark Conference three-game series on Sunday, April 23. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
