No. 16 Cardinals Split Day Two with River Hawks

Selinsgrove, Pa. - No. 16 The Catholic University of America baseball team split its Landmark Conference doubleheader with Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals took game one 8-3 and fell to the River Hawks 7-5 in game two.

Catholic ace, junior Jon Mierzwa advanced his 2018 record to 3-0 after matching his season-high of 11 strikeouts in five innings in game one. His classmate Collin Brown closed out the final two innings in the opening game victory.

Sophomore Connor Sullivan recorded two RBIs in game one while senior Danny O'Hagan registered two in the second game.

During the first game, Catholic took an early lead with0 one run in each of the first two innings. Sophomore Connor Cozad drove in senior Jack Hennessy in the first innong before Hennessy sent a single to center field in the second to bring home freshman Michael Doody.

The Cardinals broke away in the fifth with three unearned runs. They later secured the victory in the seventh with a two-RBI double from Sullivan and a one-RBI double from fellow sophomore Christian Jones.

In game two, Catholic got on the board first when Cozad sent the ball flying over the left field fence for a solo homer in the fourth inning. Susquehanna answered with four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

The Cardinals tacked on another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from senior Jake Crist. They regained the lead with three runs in the sixth when O'Hagan tied the game by driving in Sullivan and Cozad followed by Hennessy batting in Jones for Catholic's final run of the event.

The five runs wouldn't be enough to hold off the River Hawks who scored two in the bottom of the six and another in the seventh to capture the win.

Catholic, now 16-5, returns to the nation's capital and is set to host Gallaudet on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
