WASHINGTON - No. 24 The Catholic University of America baseball team topped neighborhood foe Gallaudet University 18-9 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals scored runs in five-of-seven innings with a pair of runs from junior Bailey Lewis, sophomore Connor Sullivan and freshman Keith Campbell. Campbell hit 2-of-2 with two RBIs while senior Brennan Cotter went 2-of-3 and registered a pair of RBIs and a run.
Senior Jack Hennessy drove in Campbell on a sacrifice fly in the third before Cotter crushed a two-run double to advance Catholic's lead to 7-0.
Later, Jones drove in Cotter while sophomore Sean Dempsey brought home Sullivan and Lewis for a three-run fourth inning.
The Bison notched one in the third inning and four more in the top of the fifth but the Cardinals answered with a six-run fifth to open the game to a 16-5 lead.
Catholic rookies batted in all of the Cardinals' fifth-inning runs as Campbell and classmate Billy Duke each recorded 2-RBI hits and fellow freshmen Michael Doody and Kendric Musser each brought home a run.
Gallaudet battled back with two runs in the sixth and another pair in the seventh but Doody and Duke both drove a run in the seventh to bring Catholic's final tally to 18.
The Cardinals are set to host Elizabethtown College in a three-game Landmark Conference series beginning on Saturday, April 7 at 12:30 p.m.
