Cotter Hits Two Homers as Cardinals Fall to Blazers, 11-10

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team fell 11-10 to Hood College in a battle of the bats on Wednesday afternoon.

In his first two plate appearances, senior Brennan Cotter sent two solo homers flying over the fence to take sole ownership of the No. 2 spot of most career homeruns (15) in Catholic Baseball's division III era. Cotter led the Catholic offense against Hood, hitting 4-of-5 with four RBIs, three runs and an intentional walk.

Fellow senior Jake Crist went 3-of-5 from the plate with one RBI and a run while freshman Michael Doody registered two runners batted in.

Trailing 1-0, Cotter's long shot in the first inning grazed the Robert J. Talbot Field scored board in left center to tie the game.

The Blazers scored another run in the third inning and Cotter tied the game again with a rocket over the right field wall. The hit started the Cardinals on a three-run inning as Doody batted in Crist with a double and later come home on an RBI-single from sophomore Cid Porter.

Hood's bats got hot in the fourth inning and the Blazer runners capitalized on Catholic miscues to score four. They brought another across the plate in the sixth and took a 7-4 lead before junior Bailey Lewis crushed the Cardinal's third solo-homer of the event in the 6th inning.

Hood notch one more in the eighth for an 8-5 advantage and Catholic rallied to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.

With runners on first and second in, Cotter recorded his third and fourth RBIs of the day. He found a gap in right field, which sent junior Ryan Tracy along with Lewis speeding around bases to reach home plate. Cotter later came home on a sacrifice fly from Doody to reach and 8-8 decision with one inning to play.

The Blazers managed three more in the top of the ninth and in a hard-fought effort, the Cardinals rallied.

Tracy put a single up the middle to score sophomore Jeff GuileGuile later came across the plate on a sac-fly from Crist but with the sunlight fading and tying run in scoring position and the Blazer retired the final out of the game to claim the midweek victory.

The Cardinals are set to travel to Scranton University for a Landmark Conference series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 12:30 p.m.
