Cardinals Sweep Seahawks on Senior Day

WASHINGTON -The Catholic University of America baseball team advanced its 2018 record to 27-9 with a doubleheader sweep over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals played the Seahawks to an 8-0 shutout in game one and a 9-2 decision in game two.

Senior Jake Crist hit 4-of-6 on the day including, two doubles, one homerun and a single to drive in one RBI in the first game and three RBIs in game two. Fellow senior Brennan Cotter drove in two runs in game one while freshman Michael Doody and sophomore Christian Jones each drove in a pair during game two.

Senior David Gately tossed eight strikeouts in six innings during the Sunday shutout before his classmate Sean Carroll struck out the side in the final inning of game one.

Junior Jon Mierzwa started on the rubber for game two with five strikeouts in four innings. Rookie Ethan Risse threw relief before junior Collin Brown earned his second win of the year with two Ks in 1.1 innings. Freshman Jack Ropelewski closed out the afternoon and recorded two strikeouts.

Crist drove in his classmate Jack Hennessy for the first run of the day before fellow senior Danny O'Hagan reached the plate on a pitching miscue and the Cards took and early 2-0 lead.

Hennessy scored sophomore Connor Sullivan in the second inning before Catholic produced a three-run fourth inning. O'Hagan cracked a double down the left life to score his classmate Anthony Ferlise and Cotter followed with a 2-RBI double before stealing home later in the inning.

Catholic's final run of the first game came in the bottom of the sixth when pinch runner, freshman Andre Perez ran home on a double from junior Bailey Lewis.

Junior Ryan Tracy hit 2-of-2 in the second game and came home in the top of the first for Catholic's opening run of the game. Batting cleanup, Crist lobbed a 2-run homer over the right field fence before Doody and Jones each batted in a runner for a 6-0 lead after one inning.

Crist doubled in the second to score Tracy while Jones and Tracy each hit RBI singles in the third inning to bring Catholic's final tally to nine runs in game two.

The Cardinals are set to compete in the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament beginning Friday, May 11. Game times and opponents are to-be-determined. Please check back at for scheduling updates.
