Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Messiah

Mechanicsburg, Pa. - The Catholic University of America baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader to Messiah College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fell in the first game 2-1 and lost game two 5-3.

Catholic senior Brennan Cotter went 2-of-3 in game one while his classmate Jack Hennessy hit 3-of-5 in game two.

The Cardinals got on the board in the fourth inning of game one when senior Jake Crist batted in his classmate Danny O'Hagan with an RBI single. The Falcons took advantage of Catholic's defensive miscues to bring in two unearned runs in the sixth inning.

In game two, Catholic took a three-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. Messiah answered with three in the bottom half and two more in the seventh for the home victory.

After back-to-back walks to start off the fifth, junior Ryan Tracy cracked a single to drive in senior Anthony Ferlise. Junior Sean Dempsey came home next on a single from Hennessy and Tracy reached the plate with a sacrifice fly from Cotter.

Junior Jon Mierzwa pitched game one with five strikeouts in six innings and sophomore Ross Dean started on the mound for game two. Dean tossed seven Ks before fellow sophomores Eric Moore and Jack Ropelewski pitched in relief.

The Cardinals are set to take on Stevenson University in a nine-inning contest on Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m.
