Scranton, Pa. - No. 1-seeded The Catholic University of America baseball team fell 8-4 to the No. 3-seeded University of Scranton in its second game of the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, Catholic senior Brennan Cotter solidified a new program record with the most career home runs (18) when he sent a solo rocket over the right-center fence in the fifth inning.
Cotter hit 2-of-4 with one walk while his classmate Jake Crist went 3-of-5 with one run.
The Cardinals recorded the first run of the game on a solo homer to left field from junior Bailey Lewis in the bottom of the second inning. The Royals answered with three runs in the third to take the lead.
During the sixth and eighth innings, Scranton capitalized on Catholic miscues to take a 7-3 advantage. Catholic junior Ryan Tracy batted in sophomore Christian Jones in the bottom of the eighth but the team was unable to rally. The Royals brought one more home during the ninth to claim the victory.
No. 1 Catholic continues its run in the Landmark Conference Tournament with a matchup against No. 2 Elizabethtown Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.
