Mierzwa Picked for Northwoods League Major League Showcase

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Catholic University of America pitcher John Mierzwa was selected Monday to participate in the Northwoods League Major League Showcase for his strong performance with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders in the summer league.

Mierzwa has started eight games this summer for the Dock Spiders, who play their games in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. The rising senior has 37 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched, and gave up just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings pitched in his last outing against the Madison Mallards on July 21.

The Major League Dreams Showcase brings together 100 of the Northwoods League's top prospects to form four teams for a day of scouting workouts and a double-header of baseball on Tuesday, August 7. Mierzwa is one of three Dock Spiders who will participate in the second game set to begin at 7:35 p.m. between two teams of South Division players.

Played in front of major league scouts, the Showcase provides an invaluable platform for players looking to one day make it into the professional ranks.  Participating players are hand-selected by a panel of major league scouts, distinguishing this event from the more traditional All-Star Game format that features representatives from every team.

After leading the Cardinals with 60 innings pitched in the 2017 season, Mierzwa will be counted on again to lead the staff on the mound as a senior. He has been named to the First-Team All Landmark list and D3Baseball.com's All-Region team twice each. The Laurel, Md., native was one of just three Division III players to get the call for the Major League Showcase, with all other competitors coming from Divisions I and II, as well as some from the NAIA and NJCAA.

A valuable summer developmental league and training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, more than 190 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (WAS), two-time World Series Champion Ben Zobrist (CHC) and MLB All-Stars Chris Sale (BOS), Jordan Zimmermann (DET) and Curtis Granderson (TOR).
