1997 Season

Catholic lost to Frostburg State 6-4 in the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament. Senior pitcher Brian Bickerton started for the Cardinals and went eight innings, yielding four runs and striking out 11, giving him 103 for the season. He broke his old school record of 92, set in 1995. Freshman Drew Zachry hit two doubles and had two RBI to lead Catholic.

The Cardinals last went to the postseason in 1982, their final year of Division I competition, playing in the ECAC Tournament as well. Catholic went to the NCAA Division I regionals in 1977.

Catholic's 21-16 record was its best since going 23-13-1 in 1995. The Cardinals suffered four losses to teams ranked in the latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III poll, three to #10 Mary Washington and one to #25 Johns Hopkins. They sport a win against Division I Georgetown and another against perennial power Scranton.

Season in Review

Senior Mike Duignan hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead Catholic to a 9-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Dickinson.

After a mid-season slide, the Cardinals pulled it back together with an 8-2 stretch. Catholic clinched its fourth 20-win season in six years with a victory against St. Mary's in the quarterfinals of the CAC Tournament. Senior pitcher Brian Bickerton shut down his old mates in eight innings of work to earn his school-record seventh win of the season. However, the Cardnals allowed two unearned runs in losing to #8-ranked Mary Washington in the semifinals. Freshman right-hander Eric Kittner threw a one-hitter in the but lost, 2-1.

Catholic almost pulled off its second win in a week in its last at-bat at Georgetown. The Cardinals trailed 6-2 with one strike left when Duignan hit his first career grand slam to send the game into extra innings.

The Cardinals started off on the right foot on their annual spring trip to Florida, beating Rochester Institute of Technology 3-0. Bickerton threw a complete-game four hitter with 12 strikeouts. Senior second baseman Gary Rand (pictured) had a key triple. In the Alvernia game, junior Josh Thomas stroked an inside-the-park homer. Catholic finished the trip 6-2.

Kittner pitched the Cardinals to their fifth consecutive win March 13 with a complete-game five-hit shutout of Western Maryland. Duignan scored the game's only run.

Head Coach Ross Natoli has guided the program to four 20-win seasons in the past six years. In 1995 John Douglas was drafted in the 31st round by the Toronto Blue Jays and played for their Gulf Coast League affiliate. The baseball program is highlighted by a fall exhibition season, spring training trip to Florida and games against Division I teams.
