Mary Washington 8, Catholic 5

April 6, 2002

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Junior Adam Weiss (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Farmingdale) suffered his second loss of the season as Mary Washington used a five-run fifth inning to hold off Catholic, 8-5, in a CAC game. Weiss now stands at 7-2 on the season.

After the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second, Catholic responded in the very next inning by scoring three runs. Sophomore Daniel Conway (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Chaminade) scored off an error from MWC starter Bronson Hall followed by a Brian Pietryka (Columbia, Md./Hammond) RBI groundout. Sophomore Mike DeNicola (Lyndhurst, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) rounded out the scoring with an unearned run off another error by Hall.

Hall made up for his two errors by throwing a complete game to earn the win. Hall gave up nine hits, five runs (four earned), while walking three and striking out eight. Weiss lasted 5.1 innings before leaving in the sixth with the bases loaded. The junior surrendered eight hits, six runs (five earned), while just walking two and fanning five.

Mike Drummond led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left then scored on the next batter as Weiss threw a routine grounder away from first baseman Justin Siller (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Donovan) to tie it at 3-3.

The Eagles big inning came in the fifth as MWC used a combination of hits and walks to take an 8-3 lead.

Catholic would get within three runs as Siller scored off a Bernard Dennis (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) single. The next batter, Baha Azimirad (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill), grounded out to second but not before Billy Rue scored to make it 8-3. Siller led Catholic by going 2-for-5 with a run scored.

In the ninth, CUA threatened late, with two on and two outs but Hall managed to get Siller to ground out for the final out.

Catholic returns to action tomorrow as they play a non-league game at Bridgewater College at 1 p.m.
