Catholic 10, Villa Julie 4

Mar 28, 2003

WASHINGTON - An eight-run 5th inning helped Catholic get past visiting Villa Julie College, 10-4, in non-league action Friday afternoon at Talbot Field.

Tim Bottomly (2-for-5) and John Schmidt (2-for-5) each had two-run singles in the fifth as the Cardinals batted around off of Mustang starter Justin McKeever.

After trailing 2-0 after three innings, Catholic thought it had a run in the bottom of the third with runners on the corners and with two outs but freshman Joe Benedetti was called for batter's interference after his hit to left would have scored Dan Conway. Benedetti was 1-for-5 extending his hitting streak to seven games.

CUA (13-6) tacked on a run in the sixth as Todd Michalak scored on a passed ball and in the seventh as the senior hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Billy Rue. Michalak was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in while Rue was 3-for-4 with a double.

Anthony DeFrancisco was 3-for-5 for Villa Julie (1-9).

Freshman Peter Doyle (5-1) earned his team-leading fifth win of the season going eight innings, giving up 10 hits but just two earned runs, while walking two and fanning three.

Catholic will host Randolph-Macon in a doubleheader here at Talbot Field on Sunday starting at noon.
