Cards hold on to win 4-3

CHESTERTOWN, Md.- The Catholic University baseball team held on to beat the Washington College Sailors 4-3 despite allowing three runs in the final innings.  The Cardinals improve to 7-9 on the season while Washington dropped to .500 at 5-5.

Pedro Rivera (Fort Hood, Texas/Paint Branch) crossed the plate in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) to make it 1-0.  In the top of the fourth, Mike Michalski (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) hit a double and made it third on the throw.  Just two batters later Bobby Picardo (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown South/Communications) batted him in with another sac fly to center field.

O'Brien scored the final two runs for the Cards after hitting a rocket to right center for a double in the fifth and working his way around the bases in the top of the seventh.  With a 4-0 lead, the CUA defense struggled in the bottom of the seventh giving up two runs after a series of wild pitches and solid hits by the sailors.

Up 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth Michael Bzozowski (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) struck out the first batter of the inning.  The next batter made it on a throwing error and was driven home thanks to a triple by Greg Perret.  With the tying run on third the Cardinal defense settled down and made two quick outs to escape 4-3.

Picardo led the Cards going 2-3, O'Brien was 1-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Ben Lopresti (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) got the win tossing four strikeouts for the game while Bzozowski came away with the save.  The Cardinals had seven hits to Washington's four and two fielding errors to the Sailors' three.

CUA will travel to York for a conference game on Saturday.
