Pair of triples catapults Cards to victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- In Catholic University's (1-0) first baseball game of the season, they proved why they were selected to the top of the Landmark Conference as they used power hitting and solid defense for the 7-1 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology (0-1).  After falling behind early a six-run fifth inning was just whet they need to get the win.

RIT scored first with one run in the second after a single to center put a man on first.  He stole second and advanced to third on an error before a sac fly sent him home to make it 1-0.  The Cards answered in the third when centerfielder Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) got on base and moved to second thanks to a hit from Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic).  Little stole third and was sent home by Cory Hudson (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga) to tie it up.

After keeping it close, the bottom of the fifth broke it wide open for the Cards as they tallied six runs to take a big lead.  Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey School) started it off with a hit to right field and Little sacrificed him to second.  Up came Maca at the top of the order who hit a rocket triple up the left field line to bring in Sweeney.  Hudson's single to center brought Maca home and put a man on second thanks to an error at first.  From that point on the Cardinal offense methodically took what RIT gave them accumulating six runs before the third out making it 7-1 which would be the final.

Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) finished with two hits and as many RBI including triple during the rally.  Maca also had two hits and was credited with one RBI.  Andrew Moldawer (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) got the win on the mound pitching five innings with five K's and Matthew Valerio (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) was credited with the save on four innings and three strikeouts.

The Cardinals will continue their spring break road trip in Myrtle Beach with a game versus Wesley on Monday at noon.
