Grear and Esposito honored by Landmark Conference

WASHINGTON – After sweeping a doubleheader vs. Gettysburg this past weekend, the CUA baseball team was rewarded for its work on Monday with the Landmark Conference naming Dave Grear and Ron Esposito the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.  Grear hit .571 in the two games with a double, home run and six RBI, while Esposito picked up the game two win by throwing five shutout innings.

Grear had a big weekend for CUA, going 4 for 7 in the Cardinals pair of victories, and registering a slugging percentage of 1.143.  The New Jersey native also totaled eight putouts and a perfect fielding percentage.

In CUA’s 9-8 game one win Grear went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored.  In game two he delivered the big blow for the Cardinals with a first inning grand slam that sailed well over the scoreboard in left field.  Grear finished that game with two hits in three at bats to go along with four runs batted in and a run scored.

Esposito earned his first win of 2011 with a terrific performance in CUA’s game two win on Saturday.  The senior hurler went five scoreless innings, struck out five and walked just one batter in leading the Cardinals to a 7-3 win over the Bullets.

CUA concludes its season-opening homestand on Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to McDaniel at Talbot Field.  First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
