Cardinals drop 24-10 decision at Guilford in road finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Cardinals dropped their third straight ODAC contest on Saturday, falling to Guilford 24-10.  The CUA defense held the Quakers to three field goals through 29 minutes of the opening half, but Guilford found the end zone right before halftime to open up a 16-0 lead that it would not relinquish.

CUA received the opening kick-off and after converting a pair of 3rd downs to keep the drive going, the Cardinals failed on 4th down and turned the ball over on downs.

Guilford then took over and marched 46 yards in 11 plays, and went up 3-0 on a 41-yard field goal by Tyler Hunt.

Early in the 2nd, the Quakers went in front by six when Hunt nailed a 30-yard field goal.

After a pair of CUA punts, Guilford upped its lead to nine with Hunt's third field goal of the half, this one coming from 19 yards away.

With just over two minutes to play before halftime, Guilford got the ball back and was able to drive 34 yards in 2:09, culminating with a one-yard TD run by freshman quarterback Matt Pawlowski to make it 16-0 at the break.

Following a scoreless 3rd quarter, CUA got right back into the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Greg Cordivari to Tucker Hubbell to make it 16-7.

After the Cardinals forced a turnover on downs, Timbo McGarry booted a 21-yard field goal to bring CUA within 16-10 with 5:57 remaining.

Guilford had an answer though, as the Quakers went 59 yards in only five plays and took a 24-10 lead when Mike Williams rushed 30 yards for a touchdown.

CUA got the ball back, but a Guilford interception all but ended this one.

Guilford finished with 444 yards of total offense, led by 201 yards passing and another 136 rushing by Pawlowski.

Williams added 120 yards on 20 carries, while Adam Smith hauled in five receptions for 37 yards.

CUA had just 274 yards of offense, and the Cardinals lost the time of possession battle 35:54 to 24:06.

Junior Conor Stueckler continues to impress from his linebacker spot, totaling 14 more tackles on the day, while senior Kevin Ross finished with 10 stops.

CUA closes out its 2012 schedule on Saturday, November 10 when the Cardinals play host to Bridgewater College.  Start time on Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. from inside Cardinal Stadium.
