CUA Football Squad Opens Season at McDaniel

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America Football team returns to the grid iron on Saturday, Sept. 7 to take on the Green Terror of McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium at 7:00 p.m.  Fans can watch the action through McDaniel's live video feed or track the action from their live stats (www.mcdanielathletics). 

Setting The Scene: The 2013 season kicks off tonight when CUA goes helmet-to-helmet with the Green Terror of McDaniel in Westminster, Md.  The Cardinals are coming off a 3-7 season, opening 2012 with a 45-28 victory over McDaniel at Cardinal Stadium in Washington, D.C.  The Cardinals welcome back a trio of all-conference performers.  Linebacker Conor Stueckler (4 TFLs) tied for the league lead with 114 tackles en route to an All-ODAC Second Team selection.  Offensive lineman Michael O'Shea and Eric Hrynczyszyn were second and third team honorees, respectively.  Wide receiver Andrew Ouellette (54 rec., 661 yds, 5 TDs in 2011), limited to four games last season, looks to return to his 2011 form that saw him earn second team laurels.

The Series: CUA and McDaniel are meeting for the 17th time this evening with the Green Terror leading the series 10-6.  The school's first met in 1912 and have split the last four meetings.  If victorious, the Cards will tally three straight wins over McDaniel for the first time in school history

The Last Time They Met: CUA used a number of big plays to win its sixth season opener in the last seven years on Friday evening with a 45-28 win over McDaniel inside Cardinal Stadium. Senior Greg Cordivari threw for 312 yards and four scores, while classmate Alonzo Cooke caught seven passes for 156 yards and two TDs.  The 45 points were the most CUA has scored in an opener since piling 68 on Greensboro in 1998. The Cardinals have averaged 42 points in their last two games against McDaniel, both wins.

Strong Starts: The Cardinals have won six of seven season openers under Dave Dunn with the lone loss coming in 2009 vs. Shenandoah.  Prior to Dunn arriving at CUA, the Cards had lost seven straight openers.

Running Strong: Senior Mike Pitsenberger appeared in all 10 games for the Cardinals.  Where he led the team in rushing for the second consecutive season, tallying a total 587 yards.  Pitsenberger also guided the Cards in scoring with 60 points on 10 touchdowns, notched 10 receptions for 60 yards. 

Sack By Stueckler: Conor Stueckler led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference last year in total tackles with 114 (11.4 per game). 

Cleaning Up Plays: The Cardinals led the ODAC in fumble recoveries with 22 during the 2012 season.

Nocturnal Behavior: CUA is 7-6 in night games under Dave Dunn.  The Cardinals obtained their first night win against McDaniel last season (8/31/12).

Strong Leadership: The Cardinals carry 26 senior student-athletes on the 2013 roster, breaking last season's historical record. 

Preseason Predictions: The mighty red and black will have an upward battle this season after being predicted to finish eighth in the ODAC. 

Putting The Student In Student-Athlete: The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its All-Academic Team list, which honors ODAC student-athletes who maintained a 3.25 grade point average or above during the 2012-13 academic year.  From the Catholic University football program, 29 student-athletes made the list out of 1,459 honorees. 

Cleaning Up Plays: The Cardinals led the ODAC in fumble recoveries with 22 during the 2012 season.
