CUA Welcomes Randolph-Macon for ODAC Matchup

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University football team welcomes the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon on Friday, Oct. 11 for the first home-based Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest of the season.

CUA is 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC, while R-MC is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Setting the Scene: The Cardinals return to the nest following their first loss of the season on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a score of 39-27 at Hampden-Sydney.  In their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game of the season, Tanner Keefe, Andrew Oullette and Nikolas Echeverria each scored touchdowns in the contest.  Quarterbacks E.J. Montgomery and TJ Tutone split the four touchdown passes.  Montgomery completed a three-yard pass to Keefe and a 43-yard pass to Echeverria, as Tutone completed a 40-yard pass to Keefe and an eight-yard pass to Oullette.  Nick Cortese rushed for 41 yards with a loss of one.  Keefe amassed four catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns.  Conor Stueckler finished with seven tackles, four of which were solo tackles, as Anthony Albanese tallied two sacks for 15 yards and Mark D'Annibale attained one sack for a Hampden-Sydney loss of eight yards.

The Series: The Cardinals and Yellow Jackets meet for the 35th time this evening with Randolph-Macon leading the series 20-13.  Last season, R-MC defeated the Cardinals 45-12 in Ashland, Va.  CUA has not beaten RMC since earning a 14-7 win in 2006.  

The Last Time They Met (10.5.12): In last season's meeting with Randolph-Macon, the Cardinals went in front 6-3 late in the first, R-MC stormed back with 42 of the next 48 points to earn the win.  Without their starting quarterback, CUA was 4-of-14 on 3rd downs and totaled 11 first downs.  Nick Cortese and Mike Pitsenberger rushed without a single loss, as Cortese gained 50 yards and Pitsenberger gained 33 yards.  Tanner Keefe finished with 40 yards and two catches.  Conor Stueckler totaled 12 tackles, nine he took down by himself.

Taken by a Card: Conor Stueckler led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference last year in total tackles with 114 (11.4 per game).  Stueckler leads the 2013 defensive effort with 22 total tackles, 17 of those tackles he has achieved on his own.  Anthony Albanese has his eye on the quarterback with six sacks on the year for 52 yards loss. 

Thrown for a Loss: Through four games, the CUA defense has totaled 32 tackles for loss, while Cardinal opponents have totaled 23 tackles for loss so far on the season.

Commanding The Grid Iron: E.J. Montgomery has completed 47-out-of-77 attempts for a total of 533 yards and eight touchdowns.  TJ Tutone, who has also seen action in all four contests this season, has completed 25 of his 45 attempts for 318 yards with just two interceptions.

I'll Take That: 13 different Cardinals have caught at least one pass thus far on the year. Senior Andrew Oullette has collected 21 passes for 173 yards.  Tanner Keefe trails with 11 catches and 125 yards.  CUA averages 11.8 yards, while our opponents average 10.9 yards per catch.

Nationally Noticed: Cardinals appear in the Top 50 of six different NCAA categories.  Peter Rosa is No. 1 in the nation in field goal percentage, Ralph Martello is ranked No. 24 in force fumbles, Martello is ranked No. 15 in fumbles recovered, E.J. Montgomery is No. 45 in passing efficiency, Leif Colberg is ranked No. 4 in the nation in punt return touchdowns and Anthony Albanese is No. 26 in the nation on tackles for loss.
