Vidal Earns NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week Award

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America football team earned its first win of the season on Saturday and did so thanks, large-in-part to the efforts of senior lineman Patrick Vidal who was recognized by the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Vidal anchored a staunch defensive effort that forced five turnovers in a 16-10 win over Utica in its home-opener, the first career win for head coach Mike Gutelius.

The Succasunna, N.J., native was everywhere defensively for the Cardinals as he racked up game highs with 12 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.

On two Utica fourth-quarter drives, Vidal and the Cardinals forced a turnover on downs by the Pioneers on their first and then went four-and-out on their final possession to win the game. Catholic finished the day with five forced turnovers.

This is Vidal's first conference weekly honor. He was recognized as the National Defensive Tackle of the Week once last season.
