Five Cardinals Honored in NEWMAC Year-End Awards

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America football was recognized with five honorees in the NEWMAC year-end awards as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.

Seniors Andrew DiNardo, Luke Kern and Patrick Vidal were selected to the All-NEWMAC First Team, while their classmate Blake Gomez earned second-team honors. Fellow senior Nick Della Jacono made the All-Sportsmanship Team.

DiNardo, a true weapon for first-year head coach Mike Gutelius, ranks as the nation's leading punter with a 46.5 yards per punt average. He boomed a long of 65 yards this season and put 16 of his boots inside the 20-yard line. DiNardo was also selected as the D3football.com Punter of the Week on September 12.

Kern was the NEWMAC's leading tackler with 103 stops on the season and the only player to eclipse 90 total tackles. His 6.3 solo tackles per game rank 20th in the nation. He also ranks second in the country with five forced fumbles on the season.

Vidal was one of the most dominant defensive players in the conference and ranked fourth with 82 tackles despite playing along the defensive line. He racked up 15 tackles for loss, fourth-best in the league and rounded out a stellar campaign with four sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. Vidal was twice selected as the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week as well as two selections to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Gomez proved to be one of the best receiving touchdown threats in the league as he led the Cardinals and ranked second in the NEWMAC five TD grabs. He hauled in 25 passes for 360 yards on the season with a long of 35 yards. He also 10 points as a kicker with two field goals and four extra points.

Della Jacono was one of the most consistent players in the league as both a linebacker and game captain. He was second on the team and the league with 88 tackles. He finished a career-best season with four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception.
