Bridgewater 55, Catholic 13 Nov. 10, 2001

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The 2001 season came to a close for Catholic as Bridgewater scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Cardinals, 55-13, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. With the win, the Eagles finished a perfect 9-0 and 6-0 in the ODAC, while the Cardinals finished at 3-7 and 1-5 under first-year head coach Rob Ambrose.

Bridgewater quarterback Jason Lutz hooked up with receiver Marcus Richardson three times in the first quarter, while Lutz would throw two more scores and running back Davon Cruz added another to put Catholic in a 42-0 deficit going into the locker room at the half. Lutz finished with 344 yards and five touchdowns on just 8-for-12 passing. Lutz's 443 total yards of offense and his five scores were school records. He was part of the Eagle offense that set the school record for total offense with 708 total yards.

Catholic did get on the board late in the game as junior quarterback Bill Sutton (Columbia, Md./DeMatha Catholic) found freshman receiver Nick Bublavi (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) on a 37-yard scoring play in the third quarter. Sutton replaced an injured senior Derek McGee (Shamong, N.J./Cherokee) to start the second half. Sutton finished 8-for-18 for 100 yards with two interceptions.

He threw his second score at the final play of the game, hitting junior wideout Dan Evans (South Riding, VA/Paul VI) on a 9-yard touchdown. Sophomore Pat Truxillo (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) led CUA with five receptions for 43 yards. Evans caught four passes also for 43 yards and caught a pass for the 10th consecutive game.

Senior Puri Garzone (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle) led the Cardinals in rushing as the tackle converted to running back late in the game to grind out 37 yards on six carries. Teammate RB James Vollono (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) gathered 25 yards on 12 carries.

McGee was 9-for-24 for 81 yards and an interception before suffering an injury late in the second quarter. He finished his CUA career with 8,097 yards on 654-for-1185 passing (55.5%) with 75 touchdowns, 31 interceptions, and 513 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores. His 1,185 career pass attempts were five shy of Kevin Ricca's total of 1,190 (1994-97). McGee also set a single-season record for pass attempts with 370, breaking Dave Long's 324 pass attempts set in 1985.
