Football's Offense Comes Alive in Bad Weather

The weather was bad, and the field was sloppy, but CUA football's offense came alive scoring a season high 38 points, dropping cross-city rival Gallaudet, 38-13.

Rushing for a season high 246 yards, the CUA ground game was led by Rich Barry who netted 115 yards on 24 carries for four scores.  Dylan Knight added 72 yards on the ground and an additional 96 through the air on a very rainy and cold day.

Cole Johnson led the Bison offense with 96 yards on eight carries and one touchdown.

For the third game in a row the Cardinal offense put the ball in the end zone on their opening drive, this time going 64 yards in 10 plays, capped by a five-yard rush by Barry for his first score of the day.  The Bison took the ensuing kickoff down the field on eight plays, but a missed field goal gave CUA the ball back at their own 20 and put momentum back behind the Cardinals.

However, Gallaudet was the next to strike taking a 7-6 lead with 10:08 left in the second quarter after the Cardinals missed the extra point try.  Rich Barry again capped off an eight play, 55-yard drive with just over a minute left in the half, giving CUA a 12-7 lead going into the break.

In the second half, the Cardinals dominated play scoring three times after the Bison offense turned the ball over including a 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Kyle Gaughan.  Gallaudet got the ball across the 50-yard line only twice in the second half.  The Bison made it to the endzone on the first trip into Cardinal territory, but the second trip was short lived as time expired on the fourth quarter with the hosts on the CUA 47.

The Cardinals defense had a season high eight tackles for loss also adding two sacks and four fumble recoveries. In total, the defense reclaimed 49 yards in the game.

CUA will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. as Hampden-Sydney will travel to Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals will also be celebrating homecoming before and during the game.
