Cardinals open 2010 home schedule on Saturday

WASHINGTON - CUA opens its 2010 home schedule on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals welcome the Builders of Apprentice School to Cardinal Stadium.  CUA will be looking to build on the momentum of last weekend’s season opening victory over Shenandoah when it came away with a 16-13 road victory.

CUA and Apprentice School are meeting for the seventh time this weekend with the Cardinals holding a 5-1 lead in the series.  The schools have not met since 1999 when CUA posted a 63-7 win in the nation’s capital.  The other meetings came in 1947, 1948, 1991, 1996 and 1998.  The Apprentice School’s lone victory came in 1948.

Freshman Mike Pitsenberger made the most of his first collegiate action last weekend as he rushed for 109 yards on 33 carries.  The Bethesda native scored his first CUA touchdown in the first quarter and also caught a pair of passes on the night.

CUA caused three fumbles against Shenandoah and recovered all three.  Three different Cardinals caused the fumbles and another three recovered each.  Last season CUA recovered only 11 fumbles in ten games.

Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 from inside Cardinal Stadium.  For those unable to make it, live video of the contest will be shown on

Prior to the game on Saturday, CUA students, faculty and staff are invited to meet new university president John H. Garvey at “Cardinal Kickoff with the President.”  The event begins at noon just outside Cardinal Stadium and will lead right into kickoff.  There will be free food for all those in attendance.
