Scanlon and Swarthout named All-Americans by NFHCA

WASHINGTON – The 2011 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-American Teams were announced on Tuesday, and CUA had two players honored, including first team selection Tracey Scanlon and third team honoree Mary Swarthout.  This marks the second All-American selection for both Cardinals this season.

Scanlon is CUA's first-ever First Team All-American.  In addition to that accomplishment, she earned All-Region and All-Conference honors, after finishing the 2011 season with 11 goals, five assists and 27 points.  Scanlon scored a season-high three goals in a win over Gettysburg and added two scores in a victory vs. Goucher.

Scanlon, who was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Year, finished her CUA career with 27 goals and recently played in the NFHCA Senior Game, which took place on November 19.

Like Scanlon, Swarthout received All-Region and All-Conference accolades this year after scoring 11 goals, handing out eight assists and totaling 30 points.  Swarthout led the Cardinals with five game-winning goals, including the lone score in a 1-0 victory at St. Mary's.

Swarthout was also selected for the Senior Game, and she concluded her Cardinal career with 36 goals.

Earlier this week, Scanlon and Swarthout received All-American laurels from, with Scanlon on the first team and Swarthout on the second team.

CUA went 17-2 in 2011, which included a perfect 6-0 march through Landmark Conference play.  The Cardinals won their first-ever Landmark championship and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament.  CUA then defeated Eastern 5-2 in the opening round of the tournament, before falling to Lynchburg.

This marks the second straight year in which CUA produced a NFHCA All-American, after Liz Grumbein received the honor in 2010.
