No. 7 Cardinals remain unbeaten, down Bullets 4-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Cardinals made it four wins in four tries on Tuesday, downing Gettysburg 4-0.  Ellie Banholzer, Maura Campbell, Kim Hermann and Colleen Harwood scored for CUA, which remains unbeaten at 4-0.

On a day in which it earned its highest national ranking in school history, CUA jumped all over the Bullets, scoring three first half goals.

Banholzer got things started with a goal at the 21:58 mark when she tipped in a shot from the top of the circle.  Campbell and Taylor Elliott assisted on the score.

Soon after the Cards’ first goal, Hermann was able to get off back-to-back shots, but the first was saved and the second was blocked.

CUA continued to be aggressive and was rewarded when Campbell was awarded a penalty stroke.  The sophomore calmly stepped up and beat Bullets goalkeeper Megan Freeg for a 2-0 Cardinals lead.

Hermann then got into the scoring act, netting her first of the year with 3:30 to play before halftime, sending the Cardinals into the break with a comfortable 3-0 advantage.

Gettysburg came out aggressively in the second half, getting off four shots in the opening three minutes, but the CUA defense was up to the challenge, blocking three and making a defensive save on the other.

From that point forward, CUA controlled play, outshooting the Bullets 11-1 the rest of the way.

With just under eight minutes remaining, Harwood sealed CUA’s fourth straight win when she took a feed from Hermann and deposited a shot from five yards away into the back of the cage.

The Cardinals finished the day with a commanding 19-5 advantage in shots, including an 8-0 lead in the first half.  CUA was also awarded seven of the 10 penalty corners on the day.

Junior Megan Comunale, the reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week, notched her third consecutive shut out by turning back one shot, while freshman Madalyn Dennis was credited with the Cardinals’ defensive save.

CUA returns home for its next game, hosting Rowan on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
