Cardinals drop 1-0 overtime decision to McDaniel

WASHINGTON – CUA dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in overtime to McDaniel on Sunday afternoon inside Cardinal Stadium.  After the teams were scoreless and headed to OT, McDaniel's Lara Haab knocked in a rebound to give the Green Terror the win.

In the extra session, McDaniel was awarded a penalty corner during the early going and Paige Messersmith was able to shake free for a shot, but her attempt was wide.

Down the other end, Catherine Mirsky got off a shot for CUA, but her attempt was also wide.

Colleen Harwood looked for the game-winner at the 75:33 mark, but her shot was saved by Victoria Alexander, while Maura Campbell's was blocked just seconds later.

Another shot by Harwood, this one coming at the 77:34 mark, was also saved, sending McDaniel back down the other way with a chance to win it.

Sara Reynolds took a shot at the 78:22 mark for the Green Terror, but CUA's Megan Comunale was there for the save.  Haab was quick to pounce on the rebound however, and her shot found the back of the cage for the game-winner.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities on the offensive end, with CUA holding a 25-17 advantage in shots.  The Green Terror finished with a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Comunale stopped six shots for the home team and Alexander sent back 12 for McDaniel.

The first two shots of the day came from CUA, but Alexander was there to save both.

Haab took the Green Terror's first attempt at the 11:51 mark, but it sailed wide.

A shot by Harwood at the 23:07 mark nearly put the Cards in front, but it hit off the post, keeping things scoreless.

Campbell's shot with five minutes to play before halftime was saved, while Kim Hermann's attempt three minutes later went wide.

In the second half, Hayley Wright got a shot off at the 44:06 mark, but McDaniel's Danielle DeColli was there for a defensive save.

The Green Terror were awarded a penalty corner at the 60:27 mark, and Haab was able to get a shot off on the ensuing play, but Comunale was right there to keep the score 0-0.

With less than two minutes to play, McDaniel's Kathryn Corson took a shot, but the CUA defense blocked it, and soon after, the teams headed for overtime.
