Cardinals pick up second straight conference win at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – CUA improved to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference with a 3-2 road win over Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.  The Cardinals scored just a minute into the game and then added two more scores to improve to 6-3 overall.  Katie Bertrand, Colleen Harwood and Kiera McGovern handled the scoring for CUA.

Only 25 seconds into the game, CUA was awarded a penalty corner.  Shots by Maura Campbell and Bertrand followed, and on Bertrand's second attempt, she found the back of the cage to put the Cardinals on top 1-0.

The Cardinals controlled action for the majority of the opening half, taking the next 11 shots, but they were unable to add to their lead.

Near the 30-minute mark, Susquehanna was awarded a penalty corner, and one minute later, Brodie Ercole knocked in a rebound to tie things at one.

Unfazed, CUA came right back and regained the lead when Harwood blasted a shot into the back of the cage from the top of the circle to send the Cardinals into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

One minute into the second half, Susquehanna was awarded a penalty corner and the Crusaders were able to get off four shots in a row, but Megan Comunale stopped the first two and the next two went wide.

CUA had its fair share of chances over the next 15 minutes or so, outshooting the home team 13-3, and their perseverance paid off when McGovern scored at the 62:02 mark to put the Cards in front by two.

Susquehanna continued to hang tough though, cutting it to a one-goal game once again when Katherine Millett scored at the 64:30 mark off an assist from Allison Abey.

With less than two minutes to play, Susquehanna was awarded a penalty corner and after working the ball around, Millett took a shot, but CUA's defense blocked it.

The Crusaders were then awarded another penalty corner, but nothing came of it.

CUA finished with a commanding 31-14 advantage in shots, in addition to a 9-6 lead in penalty corners.

Comunale totaled four saves for CUA, while Susquehanna goalkeeper Margaret Ruth sent back 15 shots.

The Cardinals are right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to face Misericordia.  Start time is set for 1 p.m.
