Cardinals Earn No. 1 Ranking in Landmark Preseason Poll

WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America field hockey team was voted atop the Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office on Friday. The Cardinals tied with Elizabethtown for the No. 1 spot as each team garnered 62 points.

Catholic and second-year head coach Heidi Lewis returns all but two players from a squad that went 6-1 in conference play last season as the Cards look to get back to the Landmark Championship for the seventh time in the past eight seasons.

The Cardinals are led by All-American and Landmark Defensive Player of the Year Kelly Cousoulis. She is joined by three returning All-Landmark selections in fellow seniors Rachel Day and Marisa Martinelli, along with junior Lane Adams.  

Cousoulis, Martinelli and Adams will help control the space in front of senior goalie Sophia Hamilton, who posted a 0.86 goals against average over six games in 245 minutes last season.

The Catholic offense returns all but four goals from an offense that produced 110 points last season, The Cardinal defense was also equally as strong as only two goals were allowed in conference play in 2016.

The Cards open the year at home against The College of New Jersey on Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m. Catholic's 2017 schedule features numerous teams in the regional and top-20 rankings, including a battle against the reigning National Champion, Messiah. TCNJ finished the year as the No. 5-ranked team in the country. 

Catholic begins Landmark Conference play on the road at Susquehanna on Saturday, September 23 at 1 p.m. The Cardinals host their first Landmark game on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m., against Juniata.

The showdown between Catholic and Etown will be played at home at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday, October 7 at 5:30 p.m.
