WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America field hockey head coach Heidi Lewis announced the Cardinals' 2018 schedule Tuesday afternoon. The Cards open their season on the road against The College of New Jersey on Saturday, September 1, at 1 p.m.
The slate will again be challenging for Catholic, as the schedule features five opponents from the 2017 NCAA Regional Rankings, a matchup against last year's NCAA Championship runner-up, as well as a tough set of Landmark Conference games.
"We are looking forward to playing some of the best teams in the country in our non-conference schedule," Lewis said. "We've added two new opponents over the past two seasons and I believe this lineup will do an excellent job of preparing us for conference play and beyond."
Catholic advanced to the Landmark Conference playoffs for the 11th straight time in its 2017 campaign. After reaching the conference championship last year, the Cardinals look to recapture their first Landmark championship since 2015 and make a deep run into the NCAA Division III tournament.
The Cards travel to Gettysburg in their second game of the season on Wednesday, September 5, and then return home for a three-game homestand at Cardinal Stadium. The team squares off against Rowan (9/8), Stevenson (9/11) and No. 4 Christopher Newport (9/15).
Catholic faces another stiff test on the road against Messiah on Wednesday, September 19, at 7 p.m. The showdown comes against a Messiah team that has just one loss in its last two years - last season's National Championship.
The tough nonconference road schedule also includes games against Salisbury (10/3) and Ursinus (10/16).
Landmark Conference competition begins on the road for the Cardinals as they take on Scranton on Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m. In their last regular season match of the season, the Cards play at Elizabethtown on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. The contest is a rematch of last year's conference playoff semifinal matchup, in which Catholic defeated Elizabethtown 4-0.
The Cardinals host Drew in their first conference game at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday, September 29 at 1 p.m. Catholic also face Susquehanna (10/6), Goucher (10/10) and Moravian (10/20) at home.
"Landmark play is always challenging, and several coaching changes over the past few seasons have added fresh excitement. It's a dynamic conference and one that always pushes us to perform at our best," Lewis said.
The Landmark Conference playoffs are set for Wednesday, October 31, for the semifinal round, followed by the championship on Saturday, November 3.
