Two Late Goals Sink CUA
Cardinals fall to #18 Christopher Newport

WASHINGTON - CUA field hockey (6-6) looked to have another big upset on its hands against #18 Christopher Newport (8-2) Monday afternoon at DuFour Field.  Unfortunately for the Cards, two goals by the Captains in the last three minutes of play would spoil the game losing 2-1.  With a very quiet game by both teams, neither dominated but in the end two defensive breakdowns proved to be two too many.

After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals made it 1-0 off of a tricky penalty corner.  Sophomore Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day School) hit the ball in towards power-shooter Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) as the junior wound up she let the ball go back to Maureen Brady (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) stationed behind her.  Brady's shot was a bit to the left but Dixon was standing right there to receive it and sneak it in to go ahead.

The Cardinals continued with their strong defensive play coming up with numerous stops as the Captains advanced.  With time winding down, Diana Golden was part of a CNU attack on the right side.  Golden slid the ball across to Jacque Mayer who pounded into the right corner to tie it up.

In the final minute of play, a small breakdown at midfield allowed Kelsey Dusch to get loose towards the CUA goal.  Racing down the field Dusch pushed it up to Golden who was there to hit the winning goal with just 22 seconds in the game.  CUA was unable to return the favor and fell 2-1 at the final whistle.

Despite the two late goals Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a strong day in goal with five saves.  CNU keeper Ashley Whippled tallied one.  The Cards were outshot 8-5 and had just one penalty corner while the Captains were awarded three.

CUA will return to conference play on Thursday with a home game against York at 4:30 p.m.
