Kirsten Dansbury scores her first collegiate goal

WASHINGTON - After a slow first half, the CUA Cardinal field hockey squad (7-6, 3-1) showed why they are currently one of the top teams to beat in the CAC with a 2-0 victory over the York College Spartans (7-8, 2-4) Thursday afternoon at DuFour Field.  Senior Kirsten Dansbury (Glassboro, N.J./Paul XI) scored her first collegiate goal after moving from defender this season.

The first half was scoreless as neither team could get many shots off.  CUA controlled the ball for the first 35 and had four shots, only one on goal.  The Spartans had one shot for the half.

In the second stanza, CUA jumped out to a quick lead after Jayme Dinsmore (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) knocked in a goal on the left side taking the helper from Megan Payne (Elkton, Md./Elkton) who crossed it near the cage on the right.  This gave the Cards a 1-0 lead that looked to be not enough as York came back firing nine shots in the second half.  A series of three penalty corners and rapid fire by the Spartans were continuously stopped by keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and her contingent of defenders.

At 62:13 Dansbury hit her career milestone by moving to the right place at the right time.  As CUA crossed the ball, Spartan keeper Claire Rekitzke attempted to clear it out.  The clear went straight to Dansbury who shot the ball right back at the keeper to make it 2-0.

CUA outshot the Spartans 13-8 but York had 12 penalty corners to the Cardinals' nine.  Cassilly and Rekitzke both notched five saves for the afternoon.

The Cardinals will play at Villa Julie this Saturday with the game scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
