Megan Payne hits a sudden death penalty stroke in 3OT

WASHINGTON - After on hundred minutes of play, no winner could be determined in the Catholic University (9-6, 5-1 CAC) St. Mary's College of Maryland (11-4, 4-2) field hockey game Saturday afternoon at DuFour Field.  With neither team able to penetrate tough defenses, the game was sent into penalty strokes.  After five players shot for each team, the score was 2-2 forcing a sudden victory penalty stroke situation.  This deadlock was finally broken when Megan Payne (Elkton, Md./Elkton) hit her stroke and CUA keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) saved Kaitlin Anderson's shot with her glove giving the Cards the 1-0 victory.

CUA had numerous chances throughout the first half but couldn't find the back of the cage.  The Cards had six shots including three on goal in the first stanza and also took 11 penalty corners. Adversely, the Sea Hawks took just three shots and were awarded no penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.

In the second half still tied at 0-0 the Cardinals looked like a different team. CUA didn't have as many offensive chances taking no penalty corners and just two shots.  The Sea Hawks were awarded two penalty corners and took three shots but controlled much more of the offensive play than in the first half.

After a scoreless regulation the first overtime began consisting of 15 minutes, seven players on the field for each team and a sudden-victory situation.  CUA took over offensively taking five penalty corners in each of the overtime periods and a total of shots for the extra 30 minutes. Unfortunately, keeper Emily Richards made some big saves and bullets by Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) were off target.

Going into penalty strokes, each coach picked the five most accurate shooters to have chance at the net.  SMC missed the first and Cassilly made a save on the second while Payne made her first and Ro Dixon's (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) was saved by Richards.  The Sea Hawks made the third and fourth with freshman Johanna Sturm's (Wayne, Pa./Merion Mercy) being saved before Kelly Davies (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) connected to tie it up 2-2.  Cassilly made a glove save on the fifth and Lauren Cechak (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had all of the pressure placed on her.  Cechak's shots was a hair to high hitting the top left post forcing a sudden victory situation.

Payne went up to start the second set of shots and calmly hit the right corner.  Anderson's shot hit Cassilly's glove sending the Cardinals into a frenzy and a 1-0 win.

The win puts CUA ahead of St. Mary's in the CAC giving the Cards a three way tie with Salisbury and Mary Washington to finish off conference play.  CUA will host Wooster at home on Sunday in its last regular season contest at DuFour Field this fall.
