#3 Gulls Too Much for Cards
Cardinals drop to 9-7 for the season
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey squad (9-7) fell to the #3 Salisbury Sea Gulls (16-1), 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. The game was a rematch from last year's CAC tournament championship. A year ago the two teams split in their two meetings when they were both part of the Capital Athletic Conference.
Salisbury scored at th 16:30 mark when Kandice Hancock got an open shot on the top right edge of the circle. CUA keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) got a pad on it but in ricocheted in to make it 1-0. As the first half continued, the Sea Gull offense kept churning out shots but the CUA defense managed to stop them not allowing any more scores. In the first the Cards were outshot 9-0 but were only looking at a one-goal deficit.
The Sea Gulls wasted no time taking the lead to two to start the second as Lauren Correll weaved down the left side through the defense and connected on a turn-around shot. However, the Cardinals came out inspired after the score getting off their first shot and penalty corner of the game. Soon after, CUA took its second corner which resulted in a scramble in front of the goal Erin Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) sent it to the left side where Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius) spun around and sailed it into the back right corner of the cage. Correll added another late in the half from the middle of the circle making it 3-1 which would be the final.
Salisbury dominated the offense with 16 shots while the Cardinals managed four. The Sea Gulls took five penalty corners while CUA was awarded three. Cassilly had a solid game in goal despite giving up three scores notching 11 saves on the day. Maria Ramoundos had the win for Salisbury with two saves.
The Cards will host Susquehanna on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The game is CUA's final before the Landmark Conference tournament.
