CUA earns top seed in tourney

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University field hockey squad (10-7, 5-1 Landmark) earned the number one seed in the Landmark Conference tournament Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the Susquehanna Crusaders in its final regular season game of the year.  This is the second year in a row that CUA has been the top seed.  CUA defeated nationally-ranked Juniata, who also ended 5-1 in conference, earlier in the season to win the tie breaker.

On senior day it was veteran Erin Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who started the scoring for the Cardinals when she hit the back of the cage 15 minutes in.  Classmate Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) had had taken the shot and keeper Lyndsay Meabon saved it but the rebound came to Kelly's stick where she made it 1-0.  Megan Sites knotted it back up with eight minutes to go in the half when she scored from the middle of the circle off of a pass from Andrea Fiori, this would be the scoring going into the break.

The Cardinals took the lead early in the second.  Tory Gagliardi (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere) sent the ball down the middle of the field and into the circle where Kelly coaxed it along and into the goal to go up 2-1.  With three minutes remaining in the game Repass gave CUA some breathing room with a shot from the right side to make it 3-1.  With time winding down the Crusaders gave it one last push when Christine Ottley took a shot off of a corner and Sites found the save at her stick sending it in resulting in a 3-2 final.

The Cardinals spent almost the entire game on offense barely allowing the Crusader offense over midfield.  The Cards had 30 shots while Susquehanna had just six, five coming late in the second half.  The Cardinals also had ten penalty corners to their four.  Meabon took the loss for the Crusaders but had 19 saves and Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had three and the win.

CUA will host the fourth-seeded Goucher Gophers on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference tournament.  The game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
