Rebound drops CUA to 1-2

WASHINGTON. - The Catholic University field hockey (1-2) defense played a good game against the Washington & Lee Generals (1-0) Saturday evening at Cardinal Stadium.  Unfortunately one sneaky shot got past keeper Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) but that ball meant the difference between winning a losing as the Cards dropped the game 1-0.

Both teams came out firing for the entire game as it proved to be a defensive battle.  The Cards controlled the ball for much of the game allowing plays to develop.  The Generals, on the other hand, utilized a scrappy attack cleaning up any loose ball near the cage trying to put it back.  After a scoreless first half, CUA held a 9-5 shooting advantage but that wouldn't be enough.

At 44:09 in the second half Washington & Lee finally connected on one of their rebounds as Sallie Armstrong stayed persistent near the goal and hooked a ball off of Cassilly's pad right back in before she could stop it.  This made the score 1-0 which would also be the final.

The General ended the game with an 18-13 shooting advantage as well as 11-9 on penalty corners.  Part of the low score can be attributed to the outstanding defensive play of Michele Repass (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) on the General corners as she single handedly broke up a number of their attempts.  Cassilly finished with ten saves on the day and the loss while Cardinal keeper Irene Jorden (Riva, Md./South River) also posted five saves playing the entire first half.

The Cards are back in action on Tuesday with a contest against Gettysburg at Cardinal Stadium beginning at 4:30 p.m.  The game is part of CUA's Women's Sports Week as every home game for the next seven days will feature one of the Cardinals women's teams.
