Postseason begins on Wednesday for Cardinals at Susquehanna

WASHINGTON – Fresh off its eighth shutout win of the season this past weekend, the CUA field hockey team will begin its quest for a conference championship on Wednesday afternoon.  The Cardinals will travel to Pennsylvania to take on Susquehanna in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament.

CUA has had a terrific season to date, ranking 16th in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Coaches Poll.  This marks the seventh straight week in which the Cardinals have been nationally ranked after debuting on September 21.

The Cardinals continue to be among the nation's best in the rankings as well, where CUA checks in at number-19 this week.  In the ratings, the Cardinals are 18th in the national ratings and sixth in the South Atlantic Region.

CUA has done it with both offense and defense this season, ranking atop the conference in scoring margin, scoring average, shutouts, goals against average, goals scored, goals scored per game, goals allowed, and goals allowed per game.

Head coach Gia Cillizza's squad has shown terrific balance on offense with 13 different players having scored at least one goal, led by Mary Swarthout (14), Emma Dixon (11) and Meredith Chandler (10) in double digits.  Swarthout also leads the Cardinals in assists with seven and game-winning goals with five.

Defensively, senior Liz Grumbein headlines a Cardinals defense that has been nothing short of stingy all season long.  CUA has shut out eight opponents, and surrendered more than one goal on only three occasions.  Overall CUA has outscored its opponents 61-16, including an incredible 35-8 margin in the second half.

Wednesday will be the Cardinals' fourth straight appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament.  CUA brings a 2-3 record in those games into the contest, having won semifinal games in 2007 and 2008.

The third-seeded Cardinals and second-seeded Crusaders will get things started at 4:00 on Wednesday from Selinsgrove, Pa.  Live video of the game will be shown here.
