CUA chosen second in field hockey preseason poll

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University field hockey team was selected second in the 2010 Landmark Conference preseason poll, it was announced on Friday.  The Cardinals received 65 points in the poll, which is voted upon by the league’s seven head coaches and sports information directors.  Defending champion Juniata sits atop the poll with 75 points.

CUA won 12 games a season ago, including five contests within the Landmark.  Head coach Gia Cillizza’s squad hosted a pair of postseason contests, including an ECAC quarterfinal game, in which the Cardinals downed Kean by a score of 3-1.

Following the 2009 season five CUA student-athletes earned All-Landmark honors, including four on the First-Team, while current senior Liz Grumbein was named to the All-South Atlantic Region Second-Team.

Following Juniata and CUA in the poll were Susquehanna (54), Drew (42), Scranton (38), Morvaian (26) and Goucher (15).

The Cardinals, who began preseason practice earlier this week, will get their season going on September 1st when they play host to Virginia Wesleyan inside Cardinal Stadium.  Game time is set for 4:30.
