Five Cardinals Named Landmark Players of the Week

WASHINGTON - Catholic University had five student-athletes named Landmark Conference Players of the Week for the week of October 7-13. Maura Campbell (Field Hockey), Kevin Romano (Men's Soccer), Kate Masson (Women's Soccer), Joe Cihak (Men's Swimming), and Joanna Ladas (Women's Swimming) were named Players of the Week for their outstanding performances last week.

Maura Campbell led the Cardinals to a 2-0 record this week in conference action and was named the Landmark Defensive Player of the Week. Campbell was instrumental in the defensive end as Catholic recorded two shutouts and allowed just 11 shots in two games, with only seven of those on goal. The junior also helped ignite the offense in a 3-0 win over Susquehanna, as she scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the second score.

A week after being named the Defensive Player of the Week, Kevin Romano proved he is a dual threat on the field. Romano scored two game-winning goals for the Cardinals en route to a 2-0 record this week. The senior lifted Catholic to a 1-0 win over McDaniel with the only goal of the game on Wednesday. At Susquehanna on Saturday, Romano assisted on the first goal of the match, and then found the back of the net himself for a 2-1 win.

Kate Masson was named the Offensive Player of the Week for her performance this week, leading the Cardinals to a 2-0 record. The senior registered five points behind two game-winning goals and an assist. On Tuesday, Masson scored her first game-winner during the team’s 3-1 victory over Rutgers-Camden. On Saturday, she set up the first score of the game, and then helped herself to her sixth goal of the season in another 3-1 win. Masson’s six goals and three assists are good for 13 points, tied for the team-best this season.

In the first meet of the season, freshman Joe Cihak showed he was up for the challenge and more, earning the first Landmark Swimmer of the Week laurels for the 2013-14 season. Competing against all Division 1 competition in American, George Washington, and Loyola (Md.), the freshman placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.23. He also finished seventh in both the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle with times of 2:01.72 and 49.56, respectively.

Joanna Ladas wasted no time returning to the form that landed her first-team All-Landmark a year ago, and was named the Landmark Swimmer of the Week. Competing at Loyola (Md.) against American and George Washington. In the first meet of the season, Ladas recorded an eighth place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a 18:50.63 time. In addition, the senior notched top-15 finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (12th) and 200-yard freestyle (14th).
