Cardinals face Goucher in regular season finale on Saturday

Cardinals face Goucher in regular season finale on Saturday

WASHINGTON - CUA makes the short trip to Towson Saturday evening to face Goucher on the final day of the regular season.  The Cardinals have struggled of late, losing five of their last six, including three straight, which has knocked CUA out of next week's Landmark Conference Tournament.

Despite their recent struggles, the Cardinals will look to end the regular season on a high note, facing a Gophers team that has only one win in the Landmark Conference this season.

This weekend's game features the top two rebounding teams in the Landmark Conference.  Goucher leads the way at 41.4 caroms per game, with CUA next in line at 40.8.  In terms of rebound margin, the scale tips in favor of CUA, who leads the conference at +8.3.  Goucher is even in that category (0.0), ranking sixth in the Landmark.

Junior Chris Kearney put together two of his best performances of the season last weekend, averaging 18.0 points on 57% shooting, to go along with 8.0 rebounds.  Kearney netted a game-high 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting in the contest at Juniata.

Since registering a season-low seven assists at Drew on January 21, CUA has averaged 16 helpers in its last six games.  During that time, the Cardinals high in assists is 22 in a win over Drew on February 3.

CUA leads the Landmark Conference in fewest turnovers, averaging only 14.5 per game.  During the Cardinals last nine games that number has dropped even lower, to 11.1, which includes four games of single digit turnovers.  CUA's season low in TOs is three, which it accomplished in a win at Drew in January.

The Cardinals have beaten Goucher eight straight times in Towson, including a 73-57 victory last season.  The last time CUA fell to the Gophers on the road was an 88-75 setback on February 22, 2003.

Goucher has had a tough season, winning only four games total, and just two since the start of the New Year.  The Gophers have won three of their four games at home, including a thrilling 66-64 victory over Drew on February 4.  Marcus Cotton (14.1) and Alex Noble (12.3) lead the team in scoring, with Cotton also leading the way on the backboards (6.5).

The Gophers rank last in the conference in scoring (67.4) and second-to-last in scoring defense (74.7).  CUA has won the last eight meetings between the schools, including earlier this season in Washington.  The last Gophers win was a 62-57 victory that came on December 5, 2007.
