CUA meets Moravian and Scranton this weekend on the road

WASHINGTON - Riding one of the best starts in school history, CUA hits the road for a pair of conference games this weekend beginning on Friday at Moravian.  The Cardinals are coming off their first loss of the season, a tough one-point setback to No. 24 Buffalo State in the championship game of the CUA Residence Inn-Greenbelt Classic on New Year's Day.

CUA leads the Landmark Conference with 11 victories, and was one of four conference teams to win its Landmark opener on December 3.

The Cardinals offense has been in top-gear this season, averaging 81.7 points per game, good for 29th in America.  The Cardinals are sixth in the country in 3-point percentage (43.5), 29th in free throw percentage (74.9), and 30th in scoring margin (13.8).

Junior Shawn Holmes was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week for a third time on Tuesday.  The Baltimore native averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games for CUA last week on his way to earning All-Tournament honors at the CUA Residence Inn-Greenbelt Classic.  Holmes also received POW honors on November 21 and December 19.

Steve Limberiou has had quite a start to his college career, averaging 15.2 points per game off the bench.  The sharpshooting freshman averaged 25 points on an incredible 79% shooting in two wins for CUA in mid-December, and was named to the Team of the Week as well as the Landmark Conference Player of the Week for his efforts.  Limberiou leads the Cardinals in 3-point percentage (55%), 3-point makes (36) and 3-point attempts (65), and he ranks second in the country in 3-point percentage.

CUA currently ranks fourth in America in rebound margin (+12.4).  The Cardinals have outrebounded all 12 of their opponents, with a high of +35 in the opener vs. Penn State-Harrisburg.

Moravian enters this weekend with an overall record of 4-7, which includes a 78-74 overtime loss to Scranton in the Landmark Conference opener.  The Greyhounds dropped a 76-71 decision to Albright on Tuesday in the championship of the Starters Classic, which came after a 70-63 win over SUNY Old Westbury.

Moravian is led in scoring by D.J. Strayhorn (18.9), with Marcus Hardy pulling down a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per contest.  CUA leads the all-time series between these foes 7-2, which includes a two-game sweep last season.

The defending conference champions, the Scranton Royals come into this weekend with a record of 8-4, which includes a 78-74 overtime win vs. Moravian in December.  Scranton has won its last four games, including a 62-47 decision vs. King's on Tuesday in the championship of the Cross County Challenge.

Travis Farrell is the team's leading scorer (15.2) and rebounder (6.2), while Tommy Morgan and Ross Danzig lead the squad in assists (2.3).  Scranton leads the all-time series with CUA 25-13, which includes three wins a season ago. CUA has not beaten the Royals since January 17, 2009, and has not won in Scranton since November 25, 2006.
