Kearney's career day leads No. 12 Cardinals to road win over Tartans

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A career-high 25 points from senior Chris Kearney carried No. 12 CUA to a 60-46 win over Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.  The Cardinals bounced back from their first loss of the season with an efficient performance against the Tartans.  CUA forced 16 turnovers and won the rebound battle 35-24 to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The teams were tied at 10 during the early going, before CUA scored six straight to open up a 16-10 lead with 12:22 to play before halftime.

Back-to-back baskets by Kearney with less than eight minutes remaining pushed the lead up to nine, and after Bryson Fonville got to the hoop for a layup, the Cardinals were on top by double figures.

Shawn Holmes scored the final basket of the opening half to send CUA into the break with a 30-19 lead.

Steve Limberiou’s 3-pointer 4:24 into the second half gave CUA its largest lead up to that point at 14, and Kearney followed with a layup to extend to a 16-point advantage.

Carnegie Mellon cut the lead to 10 on Sean Brophy’s basket with 9:28 on the clock, but CUA responded with a 10-0 run to open up a commanding 58-38 lead.

The Cardinals remained in front the rest of the way and picked up their third road win of the season.

Kearney was on fire all afternoon, sinking 12 of 15 shots from the floor for his 25 points.  His previous career high came last season against Carnegie Mellon when he hit for 22 points.  Holmes joined his classmate in double figures with 16, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Fonville finished with eight.

Limberiou led the Cards in rebounding with six and Holmes was the top assist man with four.

Carnegie Mellon received 17 points from Andre Moore, but the Tartans were held to 39% shooting, including 35% from beyond the arc.  CUA also held a decided advantage in points in the paint, outscoring CMU 40-18.

The Cardinals are now off for final exams before returning to action on Saturday, December 15 with a road contest at Gallaudet.  Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
