No. 13 Cardinals secure top seed in conference tournament

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference Tournament will go through Washington after the No. 13 Cardinals (21-3, 11-2) defeated Goucher (6-17, 4-9) 71-43 on Wednesday evening to clinch the top seed in the upcoming tourney. Four CUA players reached double figures, led by senior Nate Koenig, who scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his third double-double in the last four games.

The game was tight during the early going, until CUA opened up a nine-point lead on two Koenig free throws with 5:02 to play before halftime.

Goucher quickly made it a three-point contest following Dylan Chaney's jumper at the 3:49 mark, but a Chris Kearney old-fashioned three-point play upped the lead to six 24 seconds later.

A free throw and jumper by Kyle Phanord in the final two minutes then sent CUA into the break leading 30-23.

The Cardinals scored the first four points of the second half to go in front by 11, and the lead reached 12 on Bryson Fonville's 3-pointer with 16:23 to play.

CUA's lead only continued to grow, reaching 19 on Fonville's jumper at the 13:09 mark, and 20 on Steve Limberiou's trifecta with 11:59 left on the clock.

Goucher was able to cut it to a 16-point game with 8:07 remaining, but the Cardinals scored 20 of the next 26 points to blow this one wide open.

CUA led by 30 with 1:35 on the clock after Fonville got inside for a layup and the Cardinals cruised from there to a school-record 11th Landmark Conference win.

Along with Koenig, Fonville (16), Kearney (13) and Limberiou (10) scored in double figures, while Kearney and Limberiou pulled down eight rebounds apiece.

CUA sank 46.2 percent of its 3-point attempts and the nation's leader in fewest turnovers committed only eight miscues on the night.

Julian Livingston finished with a double-double for the Gophers, totaling 11 points and 11 boards, but CUA's defense forced Goucher into 25 percent shooting from the floor and 8.3 percent from 3-point range.

No. 13 CUA closes out the regular season on Saturday evening when the Cardinals play host to Moravian College on Senior Day. Start time is set for 6 p.m.

CUA will then host a Landmark Conference tournament semifinal contest on Wednesday, February 20 beginning at 7:30. It will be CUA's first Landmark Tournament game played in Washington.
