D3Hoops.com names Kearney to All-America Team

WASHINGTON – For the third time in the last week, CUA senior Chris Kearney has been named an All-American. This latest honor comes from D3Hoops.com, which named Kearney to its Second Team. The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and DIII News also named Kearney an All-American.

Kearney is the 10th All-American in the 102-year history of CUA basketball. Of CUA's 10 All-Americans, Cardinals Head Coach Steve Howes has helped to develop six of them during his time in Washington as an assistant and head coach. The list includes Kearney, Jason Banzhaf, William Morley, Matt Hilleary, Pat Maloney and Dan Harrington.

This season, Kearney became the first player in Landmark Conference history to be named the Player and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. He also earned D3Hoops.com Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year honors, as well as being named to the D3Hoops.com All-Region First Team and an ECAC All-Star.

Kearney led CUA in scoring (16.7) and rebounding (7.0) this season, while helping to carry the Cards to their first Landmark Conference title, and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007. Kearney shot 53.1 percent from the field and blocked 2 shots per game. The 6-7 post player ranked in the top 10 of five statistical categories within the Landmark, including scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, blocks and minutes.

A native of Virginia, Kearney was a First Team All-Landmark Conference selection in 2012-13, and during the season, was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week on two occasions. He was also named the Landmark Player of the Week twice, and was selected to the NABC Reese's Division III College All-Star Game, which took place on March 23.

Kearney scored in double figures 25 times this season, topping out with a career-high 32 points in a win over Scranton on January 19. He then dropped another 30 points at Scranton on February 9.

The third leading shot blocker in school history, Kearney posted eight double-digit rebound games this season, with a high of 15 at Merchant Marine Academy on January 26.  That same day, the CUA tri-captain scored the 1,000th point of his career.
