Cardinals crack Top 10 in Top-25 poll

WASHINGTON – Fresh off of winning the CUA-Holiday Inn College Park Classic over the weekend, the Cardinals have moved into the Top 10 of the Top-25 poll, announced on Wednesday.  The 10-1 Cardinals are ranked No. 9 this week with 359 points.  CUA has won five straight games since suffering its lone loss of the season on December 5.

CUA crushed Denison in the semifinals of its holiday tournament on December 29 by a score of 77-35.  Steve Limberiou put together one of the finest performances of his young career, torching the Big Red for a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers.  A native of Pittsburgh, Limberiou also ripped down a career-high 13 boards in the win.

One day later, CUA downed Husson 82-49 in the championship game, with Limberiou capturing MVP honors.  The smooth-shooting Limberiou netted a game-high 22 points this time around, while Shawn Holmes added 17 points and three assists to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Holmes also scored the 1,000th point of his career late in the first half on a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.  He is the 39th men's player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points.

Holmes (16.5) and Limberiou (15.4) are two of three Cards averaging double figures this season on the offensive end. Senior Chris Kearney leads the squad with a 16.8 per game average, and his 6.2 rebounds per game also pace CUA.

CUA has outscored its opponents by an average of 17.2 points per game. The Cardinals are holding teams to just 53.9 points on 39% shooting, and are outrebounding foes by 4.6 per game.

The No. 9 Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday evening when they welcome Washington College to town for a 7 p.m. tip.  CUA then hosts league foe Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday at 6.
