Limberiou, Prince Lead Cardinals to 20-Point Victory

WASHINGTON - Steve Limberiou (21 points) and Jared Prince (18), who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, led five players in double figures in Catholic University's 91-71 victory over Medgar Evers College in the AJ Buchanan Classic in Purchase, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.

The win came in the third-place game at Manhattanville College's Kennedy Gymnasium.

Freshman Louis Khouri came off the bench and posted career highs of 16 points and eight rebounds. He dropped in all four of his 3-point attempts in the first half as the Cardinals (3-1) bolted to a 51-30 halftime lead.

CUA's Kyle Phanord added 11 points and Bryson Fonville 10. The backcourt starters combined for 13 assists vs. one turnover. Prince, starting for the first time in his career, was named to the All-Tournament team. He scored a personal-best 25 points Friday.

Limberiou bounced back from his nine-point effort Friday by making 6 of 14 from the field (3-for-7 on 3s) and all six of his free throws. The junior from Pittsburgh is averaging 19.5 points per game. Riley Kirsch corralled 10 rebounds for the second straight game, and Limberiou and Phanord boarded six apiece.

Khalid Yousef paced Medgar Evers (1-4) with 18 points and Pablo Segura 10. Valin Williams had 13 rebounds and seven of the Cougars' 13 turnovers. The Cards only turned it over seven times and had 20 assists.

The Cardinals don't play again until they travel to Baltimore to take on Division I Loyola University Maryland on Wed. Dec. 4. CUA's first home game is against Landmark Conference rival Drew University on Sat. Dec. 7.

NOTES – With the win, Cardinal Coach Steve Howes became the second-winningest coach in school history. His 178th victory surpasses the 177 Fred Rice amassed from 1911-30. … The CUA travel party had a private tour of Ground Zero on Thursday, site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack that felled the World Trade Center Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan. … The team had lunch at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., on Friday. The Cards were guests of CUA basketball alumnus Jim Moye. Winged Foot has hosted the U.S. Open five times and will do so again in 2020.
