Washington & Lee Edges No. 6 Catholic, 74-72

Lexington, Va. – The Catholic University of America men's basketball trailed by as many as 11 at Washington & Lee on Tuesday night, but rallied in the second half to retake the lead with two minutes left. The comeback would not last long however as a Generals jumper with seconds left topped No. 6 Catholic, 74-72.

Catholic was down by nine with 7:32 to play, but a strong five minutes capped by two free throws by Corey Stanford tied it at 68-all with 2:05 to play. After a defensive stand on the other end, Jay Howard knocked down a pair of his own to give CUA a two-point lead, its first since 7-6 in the first.

Washington & Lee was able to tie up again however, forcing a Catholic turnover and then came back to net a jumper with 2.4 seconds left to take a 74-72 lead.

The Cards had one last chance to go full court with limited time left, but could not convert as time expired.

CUA received several strong performances in the losing effort. Senior Kyle Phanord had s season-best performance with 22 points, going 6-of-7 from long range.

Howard scored at least 23 points for the fourth-straight game, while Stanford posted his second double-double of the year with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cardinals will look to get back on track on Sunday when they return to the DuFour Center to face Wesley at 2 p.m.
