Catholic Downs Scranton on Senior Day, 63-62

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team picked up a big Landmark Conference victory and clinched a playoff berth with a victory over Scranton on Senior Day, 63-62.

Senior Louis Khouri led the way in his final regular season game on Franny Murray Court as he scored a game-high 17 points and added a full line with seven rebounds, five assists and three 3-pointers.

Junior Jay Howard posted a double-double with 15 points, the second-highest mark in the game, along with a contest-high 13 rebounds.

The victory is the 250th career victory for head coach Steve Howes. He is now just one win away from tying the program record for wins.

The matchup featured six ties and seven lead changes, as neither team led by more than nine.

It was just a one-point game, 60-61, after a Scranton 3-pointer with 2:39 to play. The two team traded layups in the next minute before defense reigned in the final 41 seconds.

Catholic could not convert on its next attempts, but neither could Scranton. A missed free throw led to another Royal attempt, but the Cardinal defense forced a miss. An offensive rebound and foul gave Scranton one last chance with two seconds left, but Matthew Mancuso missed both free throws as junior Will Turner pulled down the board for the win.

Rookie Riley Hayes came off the bench for six points and a career-high 10 rebounds, which included a highlight reel putback, two-handed slam.

Scranton was led by center John Vitkus who scored 14 points, but he was limited to just 4-of-11 attempts from the field.

Catholic finishes its regular season with two road games. The Cards play at Elizabethtown on Wednesday night before taking on Moravian next Saturday.
